We are told here about the wonderful world of imagination which little boys revert to, for fun. When the boy was punished, he felt bored, so he escaped to the world of imagination which is “out of reach of all time”. The the boy forgot about all his bad behavior and focused only on the smell of flowers on the desk of his teacher “the smell of old chrysanthemums.” The poet fanthorpe here is sensuous, engaging our sense of smell. This reminds us of scannells’s poem and heaney’s too as both poets also engaged our sense of smell.
Lawrence describes his childhood memories with microscopic details just like the barn by seamus heaney.
