The symbolic interactionist perspective believes that the symbols we use in our everyday life define who we are and how we see ourselves. In today’s world, this symbolic view of ourselves is strongly rooted in social media.
At a local high school, a teenager feels a vibration from his back pocket. He slips out his cell phone and discretely swipes the screen. A message pops up from his friend letting him know that everyone is gathering at the soccer field after school to hang out. This is a common sight in schools now. Every person has their phone, watching it for messages, browsing their Facebook accounts, reading through their Twitter accounts, and following their interests on Reddit.
Today’s teenagers cannot imagine not having access to their online reality. They follow their favorite celebrities, or their least favorite celebrities. They keep tabs on sports stars or political figures. Their entire perception of the world they live in comes to them through their social media accounts.
