“Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution.” -Theodus Dobhansky Dobhansky was a famous biologist. Before the theory of evolution, biology was just about observation and classification without telling how it came about. Charles Darwin came up with the theory in 1859. Not only did Charles, but Alfred Russel Wallace came up with the same idea at the same time. Darwin believe that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors. There are three types of evidence for evolution: structural, microbiology/genetics, and direct observation. Structural is the things we can observed with our eyes or with a microscope. There are two types of structures: Homologous and Analogous. Homologous has a similar structure with different function that comes from a common ancestor. Analogous has a different structure with similar function that doesn’t comes from a common ancestor such as wings of a butterfly and wings of a bird.
The record of the occurrence and evolution of living organisms through geological time as inferred from fossils is known as fossil record. The fossil record provides strong evidence for evolution. Fossil record shows that evolutionary change tends to be gradual. Fossil record contains creatures that are transitional forms between one group of species and another. By using fossil, paleontologist can look for similarities of structure such as a monkey and human. The fossil record is an important piece of evolution. The fossil record is known to be a remarkable gift for the study of nature.
Comparative anatomy is the study of the body structures of different species of animals to understand the adaptive changes they have undergone during evolution from common ancestors. Comparative anatomy has provided evidence of common descent. It is also helpful in the classification of animals. Comparative anatomy focuses on the study of vertebrate animals. French naturalist, Pierre Belon, showed that the skeletons of humans and birds are constructed of similar elements in 1855. The knowledge of comparative anatomy advanced quickly in the 18th century with the help of the Count de Buffon and Louis-Jean-Marie Daubenton. The Count de Buffon an Louis-Jean-Marie Daubenton compared the anatomies of a wide range of animals. In the early 19th century, Baron Georges Cuvier stated that animals’ structural and functional characteristics comes from their interaction with their environment. In 18th century, Cuvier rejected that the members of the animal kingdom are arranged in a single linear series from the simplest up to humans. Cuvier later arranged the animals into four large groups: vertebrates, mollusks, articulates, and radiates. Darwin advanced his theory by using the comparative anatomy. By using the comparative anatomy, Darwin explained the structural differences between species. The two major concepts of comparative anatomy are homologous and analogous structures.
Another name for molecular record is molecular evolution. Molecular evolution is the process of change in the sequence composition of cellular molecules such as DNA, RNA, and proteins across generations. To explain patterns, molecular evolution uses principles of evolutionary biology and population genetics. Evolutionary biology is the subfield of biology that studies the diversity of life on Earth. Population genetics is a subfield of genetics that deals with genetics differences within and between populations. In the early 20th century, molecular evolution started with comparative biochemistry. The fingerprinting methods was used in the 1950s to explore homologous proteins. Proteins having a very similar primary, secondary, and tertiary structure is known as homologous proteins.
Scientists have spent hundreds of years trying to determine the age of the planet, Earth. By dating the rocks, the age of the Earth is 4.54 billion years old. The data is based on evidence from radiometric age-dating of meteorite. A technique used to date materials such as rocks or carbon is radiometric dating. Scientists predicted the age of Earth based on the sea levels the time it takes the sun to cool temperatures, and the salinity of the ocean. To calculate the age of planet, scientists turned to the rocks that covers its surface. The oldest rocks on Earth are the Acasta Gneisses in northwestern Canada near the Great Slave Lake. The rocks are 4.03 billion years old.
Rocks that are 3.5 billion years older or more could be found all over the continents. Earth’s oldest rocks have been recycled and destroyed by the process of plate tectonics. Creation vs evolution is a debate that has everyone wondering how we got here. In the Christian world, creationism was believed to be true, but since the mid-19th century evolution had come about by natural selection. Christian doesn’t believe in the evidence of common descent of humans and other animals. I personally don’t know what to believe. I do believe in God and I personally feel that he did create the heavens and Earth. When I was younger, I was taught that God was the creator. There are stories in the bible that talked about how he went day by day to create Earth.
Therefore, how could evolution be taken place without God creating the moon, stars, animals, and humans. No one would never know if the theory of evolution is true. It can’t be proving so we would never know what to believe. I also I don’t believe that humans were monkeys in the beginning. I do believe some creatures does similar older creatures. I always been so curious about the theory of evolution, but I know I would never find out about it. There are only sources that support it. Is the sources facts or opinions? Only Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace know the story about the theory of evolution. Maybe one day we would be able to know the story behind the creation of the world. For right now, I will stick to the stories that I was grew up on. I will always believe that God was the creator. Science will always be an interesting and curios subject.
