Narrative Design
Narrative research design is a study of research problems associated with lives of one or more individuals. It encompasses of either written or spoken accounts of individuals to understand their life experiences. The whole focus is on the story, experience and what is being told by that individual. It is broken down in specific details such as whom is the research focused one, who said what about that individual, what is being said, who is the interpreter and who and how many people are being interviewed for the details. The details in this research are critical information as it shapes up the whole research based on this design. The details may include individual stories through various means of data collection such as interviews, letters, conversations, diaries/journals, observations etc.
Narrative research comprises of several types such as biographical, autoethnography, life and oral history and it helps guide the researcher towards the appropriate completion of stories. Biographical studies are about a person’s life experience. Autoethnography are stories narrated by people themselves where they are the focal point and provide their own personal views towards the story. Life history is about a person’s life over a certain period of time while oral history is about an individual’s own historical account. Identifying the type of design depends on the type of research being conducted.
Challenges
One of the challenges associated with narrative research is the amount of information that’s needed to complete the research study. In order to complete a successful study, the researcher “needs to have a clear understanding of the context of the individual’s life” (Creswell & Poth, 2018). For example, to complete a successful study, patience and dedication is needed in order to gather data, as the data can be provided by many individuals and sources that may not be found in one place .The researcher should be able identify the important and specific parts of the individual’s experience in creating a detailed narration as similarly given by the narrator. Narrative is a story with beginning, the middle (Linde 2001, Elliot 2005, Coffey & Atkinson 1996), therefore it is very important to capture correct and exact information.
Another challenge associated with narrative research is during data collection. In addition, it is very important to be able to identify the true owner of the story. for instance, is the narrator or any participants the real owner of the story, since there is also a risk of what if the narrator alters their story. Additionally, the researcher should also be able to identify any bias that can impact the story’s narrative. To mitigate this challenge, the participant and the researcher should agree to the terms of the research especially regarding questions of ownership of the stories. (Dwyer, Davis, & Emerald, 2017).
Problem Statement
The problem to be addressed pertaining to doctoral persistence of business students is how time management affects doctoral persistence.
Research Questions
Some research questions pertaining to narrative design:
1) What kind of time management strategies are effective for students who have completed their degree?
2) What kind of time management strategies are not effective for students who have withdrawn from the DBA program?
The first research question seeks to identify numerous effective time management strategies that are effective and used by doctorate students. The second question pertains to those time management strategies that were not so effective and lead to doctorate students leaving the program.
Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualitative narrative research design is to identify and explore the time management strategies that have been used by successful doctoral students in the DBA program and compare it with those who have withdrawn from the program.
