Dementia isn’t a disease itself but a word which is used when there is a decline in the functioning of the brain cells. Some individuals may develop more than one type of Dementia, this is known as Mixed Dementia.
The most common type of Dementia is Alzheimer’s disease, the cause of this disease is when protein builds inside of the brain. When the protein builds inside of the brain it causes a failure between nerve cells which then leads to the loss of brain tissue and nerve cells dying.
Vascular Dementia is the second most common type of Dementia, this is caused when the brain isn’t getting a full flow of blood, if the supply of blood to the brain decreases nerve cells won’t function as well as they should, and this will eventually lead to them dying. To survive the nerve cells in the brain, need to have oxygen
Both Vascular Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are similar and may sometimes present together. This is known as the ‘Mixed Dementia’
Frontotemporal Dementia is often diagnosed at an early age, usually between 45 years old and 65 years old. This type of dementia is caused when proteins clump in the frontal and temporal (front and sides) parts of the brain. The areas of the brain affected by this type of dementia shrink.
