Definitions and utilization of spirituality are as diverse as the populations we serve

Definitions and utilization of spirituality are as diverse as the populations we serve, and no single conceptualization of the construct dominates thought, definition, or integration into nursing practice. In contrast to most areas of medicine, where definition is essential to begin scientific inquiry, we understand more about the mechanisms and impact of spirituality in maintaining health and healing than we have consensus on definitions (Tanyi, McKenzie, & Chapek, 2009). Advanced practice nurses (APNs) are uniquely positioned to harness the ambiguity and diversity of spiritual experience into guidelines, policy, and practice toward enhancing patient care. Definitional ambiguity in spirituality, which could be an obstacle for other disciplines, should be viewed as an opportunity to enhance the management of complex and diverse populations in healthcare settings and a pathway for reducing health disparities.
