Another set of technique that Swindells uses in his novel to portray hopelessness with being an outsider is when Shelter talks about his cat and how it will help him in his ingenious plan. The author uses Shelter to quote “there is something reassuring about a home with a cat in it. A cat speaks of warmth, comfort, placid domesticity.” Swindells’ uses irony when Shelter says reassuring. The irony is Shelter is trying to convince people that he is comforting. Swindells also uses the rule of three when Shelter quotes warmth, comfort, placid domesticity. It makes the reader want to reason and seem as though he matches with these ideas and it makes Shelter look normal and fit in with society. The author continues to portray hopelessness when h juxtaposes th vulnerability of the homeless who are placid with Shelters violent nature.
