ABSTRACT

The use of wind energy for energy generation is one of the oldest methods for harnessing renewable energy. Use of renewable energy is an essential ingredient of socio-economic development and economic growth. Renewable energy sources such as wind energy, tidal energy etc. is abundant and can help in reducing the dependency on fossil fuels. With increased concern for environment now days led to the research for more environment friendly sources of energy and with this considerations wind energy can be considered as a viable option in this regard. Different configurations of wind turbines such as horizontal axis wind turbine and vertical axis wind turbines are mainly used for energy extraction. Horizontal axis mainly used in large scale applications and thus its implementation is generally a concern due to huge instalment setup and initial cost; whereas vertical axis wind turbines offer promising solution for smaller ruler areas or medium sized residential spaces. Energy generation from wind turbines will surely be affected by geometry of bade it is using and its orientation in turbine. For effective use of turbine both parameters should be optimally set and determined. This review work focuses on various stages for design and development of optimized vertical axis wind turbine which will studies various parameters such as general wind energy scenario, different available energy extraction methods, design and aerodynamic performance analysis of vertical axis wind turbines. Project work will include Optimization of design parameters of vertical axis turbine blades considering different parameters such as geometry orientation in assembly.

1.2 Main Objective:-

Our project COMBINE BLADE TURBINE focuses on the utilization of wind energy as a renewable source.
The main goal of this project is that the combined Savonius-Darrieus rotor is used in order to increase the wind turbine performance in low wind speed.
It will work hence wind is flowing through any direction.

2.1 Summary of Literature Review

The various parameters involved in the performance testing of the turbine are listed below:
1. Swept area.
2. Power and power co-efficient.
3. Tip speed ratio.
4. Blade chord
5. No. of blades

Swept area: The swept area is the section of air that encloses the turbine in its movement.

Power and power co-efficient: The power the turbine takes from wind is calculated using the power coefficient.

Tip speed ratio: It is defined as the ratio between the tangential speed at blade tip and the actual wind speed.

tip speed ratio= (tip speed of blade)/(wind speed)

Blade chord: The chord is the length between leading edge and trailing edge of the blade profile.

Why are three blades use?
The three blades wind turbine produces higher rotational speed and tip speed ratio than that two and four blades. The highest tip speed ratio is 0.555 for wind speed of 7m/s. Wind turbine rotor with four blades has high torque compared with two or three blades wind rotor.
Four blades wind turbine has good performance at lower tip speed ratio, but three blades wind turbine has the best performance at higher tip speed ratio Results of the experiments indicated the relationships between wind speeds and tip speed ratio or actual torque as shown. It shows that the three blades wind turbine model has the highest tip speed ratio. In general the three wind turbine models have significant tip speed ratio at lower wind speed and more stable at wind speed of 7 m/s

Chapter 3:- About Project

3.1 Power Source:-
Convectional energy
Nuclear power
Hydro-electric power
Non-convectional energy
Wind power
Solar power
Geothermal power
Biomass power
Our motto is to convert non-convectional energy (wind energy) into electric power sources.

3.2 wind turbine:-

A wind turbine is a device that converts the wind’s kinetic energy into electrical energy.
Wind turbines are manufactured in a wide range of vertical and horizontal axis.
Wind turbines can rotate about either a horizontal or a vertical axis, the former being both older and more common.

3.3 Classification of wind turbine:-
Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine
Horizontal-axis wind turbines (HAWT) have the main rotor shaft and electrical generator at the top of a tower.
Vertical Axis Wind Turbine
Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (or VAWTs) have the main rotor shaft arranged vertically.
Mostly two types of wind turbines are used in vertical axis turbine, which are as follows.
Savonius Wind Turbine
Darrieus Wind Turbine

3.4 Disadvantage of horizontal wind turbine:-
Taller masts and blades are more difficult to transport and install. Transportation and installation can now cost 20% of equipment costs.
Stronger tower construction is required to support the heavy blades, gearbox, and generator.
Reflections from tall HAWTs may affect side lobes of radar installations creating signal clutter, although filtering can suppress it.
Mast height can make them obtrusively visible across large areas, disrupting the appearance of the landscape and sometimes creating local opposition.
Downwind variants suffer from fatigue and structural failure caused by turbulence when a blade passes through the tower’s wind shadow (for this reason, the majority of HAWTs use an upwind design, with the rotor facing the wind in front of the tower).
3.5 advantages of vertical Wind turbine:-
They can produce electricity in any wind direction.
Strong supporting tower in not needed because generator, gearbox and other components are placed on the ground.
Low production cost as compared to horizontal axis wind turbine.
Easy installation as compared to other wind turbine.
Easy to transport from one place to other.
Low maintenance cost.
Low risk for human and birds because blades moves at relatively low speed.

3.6 Darrieus Blade wind Turbine:-

The Darrieus wind turbine is a type of vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) used to generate electricity from the energy carried in the wind. The turbine consists of a number of curved aerofoil blades mounted on a vertical rotating shaft or framework. The curvature of the blades allows the blade to be stressed only in tension at high rotating speeds. There are several closely related wind turbines that use straight blades.

Darrieus Wind Turbine

3.7 Savonius blade Wind turbine
The Savonius turbine is one of the simplest turbines.
Aerodynamically, it is a drag-type device, consisting of two or three scoops. Looking down on the rotor from above, a two-scoop machine would look like an “S” shape in cross section.

Because of the curvature, the scoops experience less drag when moving against the wind than when moving with the wind. The differential drag causes the Savonius turbine to spin.

Because they are drag-type devices, Savonius turbines extract much less of the wind’s power than other similarly-sized lift-type turbines.

Much of the swept area of a Savonius rotor may be near the ground, if it has a small mount without an extended post, making the overall energy extraction less effective due to the lower wind speeds found at lower heights.

Savonius Wind Turbine

3.8 Combined Blade Wind Turbine
The combined Savonius-Darrieus hybrid wind turbine is small in size and due to its Vertical axis nature therefore it is possible to obtain output regardless of the wind direction.
This wind turbine is a combination wind turbine with a lift-type Darrieus rotor which is providing main power, and a drag-type Savonius rotor which is providing starting power.
The combined Savonius-Darrieus hybrid wind turbine generator has been investigated by many scientists and its output characteristics related to the number of the Darrieus blade have been obtained.
3.9 Concept

Chapter 6: Conclusion:-
Our project COMBINE BLADE TURBINE focuses on the utilization of wind energy as a renewable source. We’ve designed the turbine to work very well in low winds, and operate at much safer speed than some of its counterparts. A COMBINE BLADE TURBINE can be located nearer to the ground, making it easier to maintain the moving parts so it’s suitable and give a best performance for domestic application. Now we are starting to purchase of Raw Material.
